Washington Building on Capitol Square
Richmond, Virginia - Yusufu provided extensive analysis of the archaic structural deck system identified as the "Metropolitan System" for floor and roof deck construction under a renovation contract with TC Mid-Atlantic Development, Inc. in June 2006 for this 12-story, 130,000 SF 1924 office building (below, left). This analysis also provided key recommendations for the structural floor load capacity and drawing details for cutting floor openings for the north wing stair shaft, the plumbing chase and the west wing stair pressurization to be used in the renovation.

Chester, Virginia - Structural engineer for the design of a 70,000 SF office and manufacturing facility. Plant produces bonded fiber components used as filters in liquid reservoirs, cigarette filters, liquid wicks and other capillary transfer components in consumer and industrial products.
Petersburg, Virginia - Structural engineer for the design and monitoring of temporary support structures for remediation of expansive fly ash fill under the footprint of the 24,000 SF office facility and attached 135,000 SF safety eyeware manufacturing facility.
Biotech Eight, Virginia Biotechnology Research Park
Richmond, Virginia - Structural engineer for a three story, conventionally reinforced, cast-in-place concrete-framed building. It also includes a 4-level, 400-car, parking garage facility. It also was the first commercial project of its kind in Richmond to utilize insulated concrete forms throughout its facility. The structural design challenges for the project were significant: in that the north ends of the buildings are located just a few feet from an entry ramp to the busy interstate highway I-95, at a site on which the old Richmond Children's Museum existed. A geotechnical investigation revealed the site contained a variable composition of uncontrolled fill material to varying depths. This, in addition to elevated loads resulting from wide structural bay framing, called for the use of a deep foundation system. The buildings are supported on drilled caissons, 50 feet to 100 feet deep, with bells bearing within the lower Miocene-age calvert formation which characterizes the geology of the downtown Richmond area.
